LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ Some University of Kansas graduate students are considering a union while their work schedules and benefits are under review.
The university is considering a reduction of total graduate student work hours to adapt to the Affordable Care Act, which requires employers to provide group health coverage to employees working 30 hours a week or more.
The Lawrence Journal-World reports (http://bit.ly/RhKFdH ) some students say the proposal to limit total graduate student work hours to 20 per week would be a hit to their income.
The Graduate Teaching Assistants Coalition, which is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, has been gaining members among graduate students. Shane Willson, a doctoral student in sociology, has been working to boost membership in GTAC. He says he’s signed up 20 new members since April.
