This year, for the first time, there will be more minority students than white students in the U.S. public school system, according to federal government projections. A look at how the numbers break down for public schools from 2014-19, according to the projections from the National Center for Education Statistics:

2014 school year:

_White students: 24,766,000 (49.8 percent)

_Black students: 7,675,000 (15.4 percent)

_Hispanic students: 12,814,000 (25.8 percent)

_Asian/Pacific Islander students: 2,565,000 (5.2 percent)

_American Indian/Alaska Native students: 526,000 (1.1 percent)

_Biracial students: 1,405,000 (2.8 percent)

 

2015 school year:

_White students: 24,497,000 (49.2 percent)

_Black students: 7,638,000 (15.3 percent)

_Hispanic students: 13,148,000 (26.4 percent)

_Asian/Pacific Islander students: 2,587,000 (5.2 percent)

_American Indian/Alaska Native students: 522,000 (1 percent)

_Biracial students: 1,448,000 (2.9 percent)

 

2016 school year:

_White students: 24,250,000 (48.5 percent)

_Black students: 7,597,000 (15.2 percent)

_Hispanic students: 13,481,000 (27 percent)

_Asian/Pacific Islander students: 2,613,000 (5.2 percent)

_American Indian/Alaska Native students: 516,000 (1 percent)

_Biracial students: 1,494,000 (3 percent)

 

2017 school year:

_White students: 24,108,000 (47.9 percent)

_Black students: 7,611,000 (15.1 percent)

_Hispanic students: 13,854,000 (27.6 percent)

_Asian/Pacific Islander students: 2,651,000 (5.3 percent)

_American Indian/Alaska Native students: 513,000 (1 percent)

_Biracial students: 1,543,000 (3.1 percent)

 

2018 school year:

_White students: 23,952,000 (47.4 percent)

_Black students: 7,618,000 (15.1 percent)

_Hispanic students: 14,188,000 (28.1 percent)

_Asian/Pacific Islander students: 2,681,000 (5.3 percent)

_American Indian/Alaska Native students: 511,000 (1 percent)

_Biracial students: 1,592,000 (3.2 percent)

 

2019 school year:

_White students: 23,818,000 (46.9 percent)

_Black students: 7,642,000 (15.0 percent)

_Hispanic students: 14,506,000 (28.5 percent)

_Asian/Pacific Islander students: 2,717,000 (5.3 percent)

_American Indian/Alaska Native students: 510,000 (1 percent)

_Biracial students: 1,643,000 (3.2 percent)
