Since the events of 9/11, the mission of the FBI has expanded from a law enforcement agency to a vital partner in the war on terrorism. In times of need, the many professionals of the FBI are mobilized to carry out investigations of violations to federal criminal law as well as terrorist-related activities. The FBI also provides law enforcement to all federal, state, local, and international agencies.

Headquartered in Washington, DC, the FBI has field offices and satellite offices located throughout the U.S. and its territories as well as liaison offices in a number of foreign countries.
