Director, Instructional Technologies
This is a leadership position charged with planning, deploying and managing services that promote and support the effective integration of collaboration, learning, and communication technologies into the life and work of the UNC-Chapel Hill students and faculty. The person in this position is responsible
for management of a wide variety of instructional services and tools, including the campus’ learning management systems. This is one of the critical positions connecting UNC faculty to technology resources and capabilities. It involves significant and independent interaction with faculty and leadership in the University’s instructional and educational program.

The responsibilities associated with this position include strategic planning and oversight for learning technologies in addition to the operational management of staff and services. The scope of the position includes matrixed responsibility for ITS instructional technology staff who are embedded in the Center for Faculty Excellence, strengthening the ties between the organizations and adding expertise in pedagogy and learning outcomes. Support for learning management systems is expected in the position, as is leadership and vision in developing and/or deploying new collaborative software, systems and capabilities to advance learning inside and outside the classroom. The position manages complex projects utilizing advanced media-based technologies to plan, design and administer programs in direct support of the institution’s academic mission. This position is considered the most senior staff
position reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor, and so this position also has expanded planning and coordination functions.

Of particular import and focus, the Director will maintain and strengthen coordination between the Teaching and Learning division of Information Technology Services (ITS), the Libraries, the Center of Faculty of Excellence, the Friday Center, and the technology support units in the College and Schools. While UNC-Chapel Hill embraces pluralism in its approach and delivery of instructional technologies, the Executive Director is positioned to coordinate activities based on guiding principles that maximize coherence (within practical limits).

Responsibilities include:
• Provide leadership for and management of Teaching & Learning Interactive programs, services and vision.
• Work collaboratively with ITS leadership, faculty leaders, governance organizations and the Center for Faculty Excellence to develop a strategic plan for instructional and learning technologies.
• Design and deploy instructional and learning services and programs in support of the University’s academic mission, especially the components related to instruction and learning.
• Manage professional technology development teams, instructional technologies and Academic outreach staff. Provide operational guidance for initiatives including production, development and migration support for campus LMS offerings. Manage unit budget as well as project budgets for unit initiatives.
• Direct the activities of affiliated infrastructure and support staff: (i) classroom information technology infrastructure and support staff, (ii) virtual labs, (iii) assessment technologies pilots

The following knowledge /skills are required:
• Master’s or PhD degree
• Strong instructional technology background and demonstrated proficiency in relevant areas,
• including learning management systems and integration of technologies supporting instruction and learning
• Demonstrated knowledge of pedagogical best practices, especially as they relate to the use of
• technology to advance student learning outcomes
• Experience as an instructor at the college or university level
• Active participation in and demonstrated leadership in community as evidenced by presentations, committee memberships, articles, communications and other service indicators
• Current knowledge of interactive media tools
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to formulate options, develop and deploy technical solutions, especially in a rapidly changing work environment.
• Demonstrated ability to work well individually and in a team environment and to produce high quality work under tight deadlines
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong dedication to the development of customer-centric standards and solutions and rapport building.
