DULUTH, Ga. (AP) _ Federal authorities are teaming up with a Hispanic construction organization in Georgia to hold a safety and health fair for construction workers and their families.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said in a statement that it is working with the Georgia Hispanic Construction Association to sponsor the event on Sunday at the Santa Fe Mall in Duluth. The event is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
OSHA staff plans to hand out Spanish-language publications and to answer questions about on-the-job safety and health issues.
Free construction-related workshops, classes and discussions will also be offered. Topics are to include: residential construction, ladder usage, landscaping, heat illnesses, personal protective equipment and the hazards of dealing with lead and asbestos.
“OSHA is committed to ensuring a safe workplace, and our goal is for workers to recognize good safety practices that employers have a responsibility to implement,” Christi Griffin, director of the Department of Labor’s Atlanta-West area office said in a statement. “This is an opportunity for Hispanic workers to also involve their families and educate them on the culture of workplace safety and health, so that everyone knows what to expect in a safe workplace.”
Exhibitors and vendors will also be on hand to conduct safety demonstrations involving various tools and equipment.
