PARK HILL, Okla. (AP) _ The Cherokee Nation is commemorating the 175th anniversary of the end of the Trail of Tears when thousands of Cherokee Indians were forced to relocate from their homelands in the southeastern United States to present-day Oklahoma.
Tribal Principal Chief Bill John Baker and others will display several artifacts from the removal during an event Monday at the Cherokee Heritage Center in Park Hill. Baker will also present a proclamation in honor of the day.
The first group of Cherokees was forcibly removed from their homelands in the southeast beginning in 1838. Monday marks the anniversary of the arrival of the final group to what was then known as Indian Country.
