Fortune Top Employers to Work For
Bigger is not always better. In 2006, no healthcare employer was included on both the Fortune500 and the Fortune Best Companies to Work For list, although a number of smaller healthcare-related organizations and some pharmaceutical giants including regional hospital systems were ranked among “Best Employers” in Fortune‘s January 22, 2007 issue. The listing is based on a survey of organizations’ efforts to keep employees happy, accounting for such attributes as salary, benefits, bonuses, and diversity. However, it also reflects some less readily quantified aspects that some employees shared in anecdotes published along with the survey, ranging from gay- and family-friendly workplace policies to pride in its products to community engagement and corporate citizenship. The list includes a number of small businesses and even non-profits whose workers’ satisfaction set them above many megacorps with much deeper pockets.
Unsurprisingly, perhaps, a number of healthcare-related organizations appear on the list. With its underlying emphasis on life-saving and health-inducing products and services, healthcare as an industry can offer workers an opportunity to feel themselves engaged in important, useful work. Some respondents in the Fortune feature spoke of feeling a particular gratification from helping people or saving lives, and noted their employers’ efforts to convey and share these benefits with them.
