TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ The civil rights group Dream Defenders is expected to present a petition at the Capitol to Gov. Rick Scott.

The Tampa Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1jaU78V) the group intends to deliver 5,800 signatures Monday “demanding that the state stop discriminating against black and Hispanic students by setting lower academic goals for students of color.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center helped organize the petition. The center filed a federal civil rights lawsuit in August saying the Florida Department of Education discriminated against black and Hispanic students in its strategic plan.

The Defenders plan to present the petition at 1:30 p.m.
