YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) _ Eastern Michigan University is launching an initiative to enroll and graduate more first-generation and low-income minority men.

The Ypsilanti school announced the Men of Color Degree Completion and Retention Plans on Tuesday at a board of regents meeting. The university says it will improve services and processes that can help minority male students graduate and prepare students to interact with people from diverse backgrounds.

The diversity and community involvement director says the programs are derived from research on factors that motivate minority men to stay in school and graduate.

The university says its undergraduate Hispanic student population is 724 in fall 2014 and its African American undergraduate population is about 3,500. It has roughly 18,000 undergraduates.

The board also extended the contract of President Susan Martin for another year through July 2016.
