DETROIT (AP) _ Officials want to designate part of Detroit’s downtown as a hub for job creation and small business growth.

Mayor Mike Duggan has named Henry Ford Health System Chief Nancy Schlichting as chair of a 17-person advisory committee that will develop a framework and plan toward the designation of a formal Innovation District in Greater Downtown.

Duggan said Thursday that the district’s focus will “be to create an anchor to support neighborhood business incubators across the city.”

The district also will lead to the establishment of entrepreneurial programs in Detroit neighborhoods.

More than half the jobs in Detroit are in the 4.3-square-mile Greater Downtown area.
