New York receives $5.9M for AmeriCorps projects

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ New York state has received $5.9 million in federal funding for AmeriCorps projects around the state.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office announced the grants on Wednesday. The money will support more than 460 AmeriCorps members who provide service to nearly two dozen groups.

Groups receiving money include ones providing legal services to the poor, rural health care, after-school and summer programs for children, housing services, youth mentoring and job training.

This is the second AmeriCorps grant the state has received this year. New York announced $10 million in funds in May.

The governor’s office says that more than 72,000 AmeriCorps members in New York have performed more than 110 million hours of service to the community since 1994.
