MIAMI (AP) _ Miami Dade County School Board members say in a region where two thirds of residents are Latino, it’s time Hispanic Heritage month grew up.
They are looking to move beyond the annual celebration of music, costumes and food. Board member Raquel Regalado proposes a program modeled on African American history month, when students traditionally research Black Americans’ contributions in areas such as politics, science and engineering.
Miami-Dade schools already offer educational resources, but teachers often don’t have time to incorporate them. Board members one teacher per school dedicated to providing appropriate curriculum. They also want the state education commissioner to create a task force similar to that on African American history to help the rest of Florida beef up its Hispanic Heritage offerings.
They vote on the measure Tuesday.
