SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) _ The city of Shreveport will finance the design phase of a Civil Rights museum and institute at the former site of the Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Shreveport.
The Times (Shreveport eyes former church as Civil Rights museum) reports Mayor Cedric Glover announced the creation of a civil rights cultural museum and institute during a news conference Monday. It will be located at the old site of the church.
He says the project will be dedicated to the African American experience and the Civil Rights Movement in Shreveport and northwest Louisiana. Glover says the church was an immense part of the community’s cultural heritage and the project is a unique opportunity to re-purpose one of the city’s historic landmarks.
The city is working in conjunction with the North Louisiana Civil Rights Coalition.
