NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Johnny C. Taylor Jr., president and chief executive officer of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, has announced a $100,000 donation to Southern University at New Orleans’ scholarship fund.
Taylor announced the donation during his speech to SUNO graduates Saturday in New Orleans. He says the fund knows that getting to college is half the battle.
SUNO Chancellor Victor Ukpolo says in a statement that Taylor’s announcement comes at a time when many students are still suffering from the financial and emotional impacts of Hurricane Katrina, even though it struck nearly nine years ago.
Ukpolo says the gift will help those students faced with financial challenges complete their education.
The Thurgood Marshall Fund is named for the U.S. Supreme Court’s first African-American justice.
At SUNO’s commencement, 498 students received diplomas.
