Associate Director, Berkeley Initiative for Mindfulness in Law – Berkeley, CA
Job Description
The Associate Director is charged with the development, administration and implementation of the Berkeley Initiative for Mindfulness in Law. Key responsibilities include:
• Administer the Initiative’s law school programming, including a speaker series, semi-annual overnight retreats, and other special events at the law school;
• Teach mindfulness techniques to various audiences, including 1L students as part of the Initiative’s 1L programming, Berkeley Law community members at weekly guided meditation sessions, in clinics, and on retreats;
• Design and execute mindfulness programs specifically designed for social justice lawyers and law students, both within and outside of the law school;
• Launch a new Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program to bring contemplative practices into law firms, government agencies and non-profits;
• Coordinate a new Working Group on Mindfulness and Criminal Justice, which will host various public events at Berkeley Law and design/implement mindfulness programs for public agencies and law enforcement personnel;
• Supervise student assistants and Graduate Student Researchers;
• Serve as a liaison to the Mindfulness Initiative’s scientific advisors in designing and administering research studies;
• Organize an annual international conference on The Mindful Lawyer at Berkeley Law for judges, legal practitioners, law professors and law students;
• Provide fiscal management of the Mindfulness Initiative, in coordination with the Berkeley Law financial services department; and serve as liaison between the Mindfulness Initiative and the departments of the Law school and university, such as media, facilities, fundraising, whose services are necessary to support the success of the program;
• Assist in fundraising for the Mindfulness Initiative.
Required Qualifications:
• J.D. degree or equivalent
• Significant experience and strong understanding of and commitment to contemplative practices, and their relevance to the legal field
• Advanced program development, administrative, and analytical/problem-solving skills
• Previous teaching experience and/or equivalent facilitation experience
• Relevant management and supervisory experience
• Experience working with small entrepreneurial organizations
• Experience in fundraising
• Ability to relate to diverse audiences – students, faculty, academic administrators, practicing lawyers – within the legal profession
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Strong interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications:
• Familiarity with the operations of a law school (preferably Berkeley Law) and legal organizations
• Available to start around July 2013
