DIRECTOR, CAMPUS COMMUNICATIONS

BASIC FUNCTION
Under the direction of the college president or designee, this position is responsible for managing external and internal communication strategies, including public relations, marketing, media relations, advertising, crisis communications and community relations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative and not restrictive. The District reserves the right to modify the assignment and allocation of duties in accordance with operational needs.

Write and edit news releases, feature articles, promotional materials, newsletters, web pages and other communications; coordinate electronic and web-based communication, including marquee postings, social media, college websites and district-wide student portal.

Serve as the primary campus media and public information spokesperson; under the authority of the responsible administrator, direct campus crisis communications and communications related to emergency preparedness/planning.

Develop and implement campus advertising, marketing, and image plans to support outreach, visibility, recruitment and enrollment management strategies; consult with campus divisions, departments, programs and offices in developing marketing, advertising, promotional and public relations materials; assist with the promotion of new programs and services; coordinate special campus events and address interested groups; evaluate the effectiveness of advertising and marketing efforts; maintain an inventory of various marketing materials.
Coordinate campus-wide image and branding efforts and assure conformity to institutional standards; supervise the concept, design and production of campus publications, including the catalog, class schedules, annual report, program brochures and internal newsletters; review and edit campus materials and publications to assure completeness and accuracy.

Serve as the primary campus communications liaison with the District Office of Public and Governmental Affairs.

Develop and maintain positive relations with local and state media and community-based organizations; cultivate relationships with government officials and coordinate support for legislative activities with District and campus administration; represent the campus at conferences and meetings as directed.

Develop and prepare the annual preliminary budgets for assigned programs; monitor and control budget expenditures within assigned programs; direct the preparation and maintenance of detailed and comprehensive reports, records and files regarding programs, operations and activities.

Organize, attend, or chair a variety of meetings as required; serve on committees and special projects as assigned; coordinate programs and services as appropriate with other District and college personnel.

Train, supervise, evaluate and direct the work of personnel as assigned; participate in selection and hiring process.

Plan, organize and arrange appropriate training and staff development activities; provide orientation for new employees.

Learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and disability backgrounds of community college students and staff.

Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.

Minimum of five years of experience in public relations, journalism, and/or communications, including experience developing and implementing public information/public relations programs.

Extensive responsible management, office supervisory and technical administrative experience that involves analytical and discretionary assignments.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or related field from a regionally accredited institution.

Extensive public relations, journalism, and/or marketing experience in higher education.

Demonstrated experience in media management and relations.

Demonstrated experience in social media development and management.

Demonstrated experience in communicating with and understanding diverse communities.

SALARY
This is a designated classified management position subject to a one year probationary period. The initial salary placement range is $79,225 – $100,245 annually, 12-month position, plus an additional $2,600 annually for an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. Initial salary placement will be determined by the Office of Human Resources in accordance with Board Policy and is not negotiable.

BENEFITS
The District is a participating agency in the CalPERS Hospital and Medical Care plan which allows eligible employees to select from several plans for their hospital and medical care. The District pays the full cost of the employee-only health insurance premium for the plan selected by the employee. In addition, the District provides a discretionary fringe benefit allowance that may be allocated toward the premium cost of eligible dependent health insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, life insurance, accident insurance, income protection insurance, and available investment options.

SELECTION PROCESS
The Hiring Committee will paper screen applications and select a limited number of candidates for an interview. This process will take several weeks. At the time of the interview candidates will be asked to bring a digital portfolio and make a presentation. A written exercise related to the assignment may also be required. Subsequent to the interviews, the Hiring Committee will determine those candidates for final consideration. A second interview may be required of candidates selected as finalists. Possession of the minimum qualifications DOES NOT ensure an interview.
