PREVENTION/INTERVENTION SPECIALIST

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Department of Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Developmental Services (MHSADS)is currently seeking a temporary part-time Prevention/Intervention Specialist to provide direct services to high risk youth in community based after-school programs and to serve as back up staff to the Evening Reporting Center (ERC) as needed. The ERC is a community based alternative to detention for low, moderate or high risk youth currently on probation who might otherwise be detained pending further court action. Position will assist in daily operation of after-school programs and the ERC to provide highly structured and well supervised group activities during the high risk time period in after-school hours. The candidate must be knowledgeable in evidence-based substance abuse and violence prevention programs; possess strong organizational skills; have experience in working with high-risk youth; have experience in co-leading groups; have experience in public speaking; and demonstrate the ability to function effectively in an interagency and collaborative capacity. Work schedule will include afternoon and some evening hours. Position requires some work in a recreational setting.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a related field and a minimum of two (2) years directly related experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Prefer Master’s Degree; bilingual (Spanish) highly desirable.

POST CONDITIONAL OFFER CONTINGENCIES

Employment is contingent upon criminal background check, driving record check, and TB test. Must have a valid driver’s license in Virginia or regional state of residence.
