Position Summary:

The Student Services Coordinator is a member of the B.S. International Business (BSIB) academic advising team and reports to both the Director and Assistant Director of the BSIB program. This position provides academic support and guidance to BSIB students concerning college and university policies, co-op scheduling, course selection, pre-registration, registration and preparation for graduation. Assists in conducting senior interviews that result in correct and coherent “senior clearance plans” which students use as a contract in their final semester to complete their degree.  This position does not require any travel.

Coordinator will prepare materials, edit program publications and presentations participate in workshops and classes; develop programs for the Living, Learning Community (LLC); be involved with BSIB orientations and Welcome Days. Coordinator must maintain student email contact and documentation of all conversations during, appointments, phone calls and Skype sessions.

The BSIB program has unique challenges as students are required to work and study internationally for one year. The Coordinator works with 15 partner institutions. Counseling students about safety, security, visa requirements, obtaining passports, and banking issues, all add another dimension to this position. Coordinator assesses students on a continuous basis to insure that they are prepared to live and work abroad in an international environment. The Coordinator must be able to help students familiarize themselves with cross-cultural adaptation so they have fewer transitional issues. Coordinator also monitors students’ curriculum so they are prepared to work in multinational companies following graduation.

The Student Services Coordinator serves as support to the Director and Assistant Director of BSIB by helping students chart their academic progress. This person becomes a mentor and guide throughout the academic career of the students. If the students have a strong relationship with the BSIB staff, their experience at NU is more successful and the students are retained until they graduate and may become strong alums of the institution. Given that BSIB course work and foreign language skill requirements are rigorous, the stress and demand factors for the Student Services Coordinator are high.

During the following academic years, the student services coordinator will assist the academic advisor and directors in completing the following activities with their class year:

1) Freshman year: prepare and teach a one credit course to freshmen. Students will work to acquire new skills and knowledge in areas including self- assessment, communication, professionalism, ethics, group dynamics, culture shock, cultural transition and acclimation. Conduct sophomore planning meetings.
2) Sophomore year: conduct country specific meetings and academic planning meetings.
3) Junior year: conduct junior clearance to map out the students final year of academics.
4) Senior year, conduct a senior interview which results in a correct and coherent “Graduation Plan” which students use as a contract in their final semester to complete their degree. Then, in January, May and August performs final clearances of seniors in preparation for graduation.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree required. This is a professional entry-level position. Candidate should have a minimum of 2-3 years of recent experience working with college students. Previous international program administration experience at a college/university is a plus. The successful candidate should enjoy working with a diverse group of students and helping guide them through their academics to graduation. Excellent computer (Excel and Word), written and oral communication skills required. Demonstrated counseling ability preferred. Individual must demonstrate the ability to set goals, take initiative, follow through, and organize effectively. Individual must be detail-oriented, flexible, and have the ability to work with precision and be able to keep calm under pressure. Individual must be able to empathize with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Individual must be able to work independently as well as an integral member of a team.  This position does not require travel.
