“Prepare Yourself, Get Your Cameras Ready!”
Calling all HBCU students!! The Black Collegian has created an opportunity for you to earn scholarship dollars up to $500 to show the world your talent. This your time to shine! You will be competing against HBCU students across the nation. Do all of your friends say you have the best voice in the world? Can you dance like Jagger? Does your choir Bring the Noise?
We created six categories:
Vocal Performance with Song (solo, duo, group) – Show us your best vocal performance of an original song or cover with music. It can be you or your vocal group.
Vocal Performance with Instrumentation (solo, duo, group) – Show us your best vocal performance of an original song or cover with instrument(s). It can be you or your vocal group.
Vocal Performance of literary word – Show us your best vocal performance of an original literary piece (poem, haiku, etc) with no background music. The only thing we should hear is your voice.
Academic Superstars – Every HBCU president will have the opportunity submit 1 (one) student for a $100 scholarship to represent their university/college. This category is not judged by likes or views.
Gospel Choir & University Choir – Do you think your school choir is the best in the nation? Because this is your chance to find out. We want to see the best choir performance. We’re extremely excited for the submissions in this category.
Model & Fashion – Show us your best clothing and runway walk via video. Strut your stuff so that that even a“fashion week” designer would find you fierce and impressive. (Think Tracy Reese, B. Michael, Darlene and Lizzy Okpo, Angela Simmons, Marc Jacobs, Armani, etc.)
How did the Black Collegian come up with this concept? The Black Collegian has a precedent of giving young people exposure to the world. Ask Tyra Banks! She graced the covers of the Black Collegian in our 1989 issue, which gave her a platform to propel her career as a global fashion icon. Your next!
The competition starts March 3, 2014. The final date for video submission is April 30, 2014. All videos have to be posted on Youtube and can be no longer than 90 seconds. The video with the most likes will determine the winner. You can only submit one video per category, but you can submit to multiple categories. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes for Vocal Performance (solo, duo, group w/ song or instrumentation), Vocal Performance of Literary Word, Gospel Choir & University Choir, and Model/Fashion. 1st Place is a $500 scholarship disbursed directly to the school for the winning student/team. 2nd Place is a $250 scholarship disbursed directly to the school for the winning student/team. 3rd Place is a $100 scholarship disbursed directly to the school for the winning student/team.
