DETROIT (AP) _ A nonprofit group has opened an office in Detroit to help train skilled legal immigrants and refugees to find work in Michigan.
Upwardly Global already has offices in the San Francisco area, New York and Chicago.
Gov. Rick Snyder’s administration and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said Monday’s office opening will make Michigan a leader in integrating foreign-trained immigrants into the workforce. The office space was donated by Michigan State University.
Upwardly Global helps immigrants with interview preparations, salary negotiations, networking and relicensing. Michigan is the first state to sponsor Upwardly Global’s professional engineering internship program by offering incentives to employers.
Michigan Offices for New Americans Director Bing Goei says the state is demonstrating “we are open to the world.”
