ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) _ The Washington Redskins have filed a motion defending the team’s federal lawsuit against a group of Native Americans over trademark protections.
The Washington Post (Redskins file motion defending suit against Native American group) reports the team filed a motion late Friday night arguing that the team chose the correct courthouse and plaintiffs to sue in Alexandria federal court
The filing is a response to a motion to dismiss the case by five Native Americans who won a decision by the federal Trademark Trial and Appeal Board over the team’s trademarks. The board found the team name and logo are disparaging to American Indians.
In an attempt to salvage its trademark protections, the team filed a lawsuit against the Native Americans from five different tribes. Lawyers for the Native Americans argued the team should sue the trademark office instead.
