After applying for the position of Management Consulting Analyst with Accenture through the Mount Holyoke College Career Development Center, Moreen participated in a series of one-on-one behavioral and case style mock interview preparation sessions. She was determined to have the opportunity to be considered as a candidate for Accenture and utilized all the relevant resources that the Career Development Center offers to students. I have been working at Mount Holyoke College since June 2011. As the designated staff member for the senior class, I spend a great deal of time preparing students to land the job that best suits their current and future professional goals. Since arriving on campus, Moreen Tonny has sought out opportunities to become involved and take on leadership roles. She was then able to work with us to strategize and refine her networking and job search skills. Moreen jumped right into the on-campus recruiting process at the beginning of this academic year, pursuing opportunities posted in nonprofit, capacity building and management consulting. At the same time, she worked in conjunction with my colleagues during additional 30-minute advising and 15 minute walk-in appointments to tailor her resume and cover letter to the positions that interested her. One of the most critical aspects of Moreen’s success was her willingness to take advantage of the plethora of personal, online and community resources available to her.
At Mount Holyoke College, we are aware that we can set each student up for success by providing resources, developing a relationship based on the student’s goals, and encouraging students to update us regularly so we can empower them to be successful in the preparation, interview and negotiation processes. Moreen is a great example of a student who used these resources effectively. This support for the job search leads to satisfied alumnae who are then independently more adept at conducting well thought out and comprehensive searches for future opportunities. The Lynk experience at Mount Holyoke College connects academic work with practical applications of the liberal arts and sciences, helping students think deeply about what they want to do after graduation, acquire skills, and match career options with their personal goals. It is truly rewarding to see how the Lynk, Career Development Center resources, and students’ hard work can land them in advantageous positions to engage with the world.
