Since 2009, OMG Center has directed the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)’s national program, New Connections: Increasing Diversity of RWJF Programming. New Connections provides research funding and career development opportunities to diverse early- to mid-career scholars and researchers working in fields related to health and health care. The program aims to introduce these to scholars to the Foundation and foster the development of a vibrant network of diverse researchers. OMG Center is seeking to fill the position of National Program Deputy Director for New Connections.

The OMG Center (, a Philadelphia based nonprofit organization, supports innovative solutions to the challenges facing communities through evaluation, strategic research and planning, and philanthropic services. OMG works nationally with organizations, individually and collectively, in the nonprofit, foundation and governmental sectors. Areas of established expertise include public health and healthcare, higher education, arts and culture, children, youth and families, and community and regional development.

The New Connections national program office is housed at OMG Center and is staffed by a National Program Director, National Program Deputy Director, Director of Network Career Development, Project Manager and Project Coordinator.

The National Program Deputy Director for New Connections plays a significant role in senior leadership and management of the National Program Office, working closely with the Program Director on developing the program’s strategy, policies, budgets, work and communications plans while managing day-to-day program operations.

As a professional staff member, the National Program Deputy Director for New Connections will work with RWJF New Connections program staff and staff members of the OMG Center to ensure successful direction and implementation of the multiple components of the New Connections program. Program components include: grantmaking and grants management, technical assistance to grantee sites, program dissemination and outreach, and communications. Additionally, the Deputy serves as a spokesperson in the field.

The National Program Deputy Director for New Connections is expected to demonstrate a passionate commitment to the goals and mission of the New Connections program.

Essential Job Responsibilities:
The National Program Deputy Director for New Connections works with the National Program Director to play a significant senior leadership and management role of the New Connections program which includes:
• Collaborating with Program Director and engage program staff on the development and management of policy, programming, and budgets;
• Keeping current about the state of the field in order to: serve as a conduit of information to NPO staff, RWJF, and grantees;
• Working with Director and NPO program staff to advance the field by networking, coordinating, and promoting NPO activities with other national organizations, interested parties, and partners;
• Representing program and promotes the work of the NPO and grantees at selected national forums, conferences and meetings;
• Conducting relevant issue and/or public policy analysis and writes articles that advance the state of the field.
• Hiring and supervising program staff and consultants;
• Serving as key liaison and maintains consistent contact with RWJF:
• Developing and overseeing grantmaking;
• Providing and/or overseeing technical assistance and support in programmatic, fiscal, and evaluation areas to grantee sites;
• Monitoring program impact by tracking and reporting on all components of the program; and
• Overseeing the management and monitoring of grantee, alumni and applicant relations.

Minimum Requirements:
• Doctoral degree, or at minimum a Master’s degree with several years of work experience, in fields such as health, behavioral or social science, education, public policy/administration. Program management experience required with personal or work experience in academia preferred.
• From three to five years of related professional work experience with diversity programs, including programs to help increase the representation of historically underrepresented groups, as well as work with alumni, fellows and scholars programs where responsibilities included monitoring, tracking and supporting network members.
• Personally motivated to support the goals of the New Connections program.
• Proven management, organizational, fiscal, and analytic skills.
• Strong project and people management skills, including demonstrated ability to supervise team members and lead program initiatives.
• Ability to think independently and interact effectively as part of a team and in multidisciplinary teams and settings; be flexible, creative, and able to juggle multiple priorities; and be tolerant of ambiguity and differences in work approaches.
• Ability to work within a high-paced environment with competing demands while ensuring high-quality work by self and staff.
• Excellent written, electronic communication and oral presentation skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and networking skills; collegial, energetic, ability to develop productive relationships with colleagues, grantees, applicants, consultants, external funders and others who contribute to New Connections development and management.
• Strong quantitative and qualitative research skills; experience with statistical packages helpful.
• Strong computing skills including use of Internet, MS Office Suite, Excel and PowerPoint as well as familiarity with databases and social media.
• Ability to travel as required.
